The Pacific Science Center ignites curiosity and discovery in all of us.

I’ve done a combination of volunteer, seasonal, and full-time work for the Pacific Science Center from 2017 to 2023. Their mission to expand science education, and their ongoing work to experiment and innovate, inspires and motivates my work.

In my time as a Science Engagement and Makerspace Facilitator, I had the opportunity to create a variety of print graphics, motion graphics, and pop-up experiential graphics.

make it & take it climate change challenge

How do Seattle-area kids think about climate change? What advice do our guests have about saving the earth? For PacSci’s Earth Month celebration, I created and designed a Climate Change Poster Gallery. I designed and created a coloring page for guests of all ages to use, though we also encouraged guests to get creative with their own designs. In the end, we received thousands of submissions, and displayed the best ones on a wall for guests to see over the month of May.

“monster sound” live science stage show graphics

Are you ready to rock?! Monster Sound is PacSci’s Live Science Show all about the science of sound. During the show, the presenter uses an online oscilloscope broadcast live onto monitors, and needed a digital display of the show title and start time for the rest of the performance.

I wanted to emulate classic rock band logos, by combining an angular blackletter typeface with a heavy calligraphic typeface. The deep maroon, golden yellow, and white invoke the same era of classic rock, but still feel modern with flat colors and striking graphics. The texture overlay is reminiscent of promotional posters plastered on a wall.

Feeling fired up? Combustion is PacSci’s Live Science Show all about the science of fire. Following my digital branding for Illusions and Monster Sound, I wanted to round out our digital branding with the third and final currently-running stage show.

I wanted to separate the visual style of Combustion from the other shows, while working with the same yellows & reds that pre-existing materials used. Energy and simplicity stand out here, and the simple frame-by-frame animation of a flame doesn’t overshadow the performer’s style.

Can you believe your eyes? Illusions is PacSci’s Live Science Show all about the science behind tricking your senses. During the performance, the presenter shows a slideshow of various optical illusions on monitors, and needed a digital display of the show name and start time for the rest of the performance.

Since Illusions already leans heavily into stark blacks-and-whites, I wanted to lean into that further with a striking slide that doubled as an illusion itself. I sought out chunky, playful type — eventually altering the O in Illusions to create a googly-eye animation inside. The background of the slides is also another optical illusion, designed to catch guests’ eyes and keep them staring.

tropical butterfly house multi-language cards

While our Tropical Butterfly House provides many guests access to hundreds of tropical butterflies, our current signage only caters to guests speaking English and Spanish. These Tropical Butterfly House guides list our guidelines in the twelve most-spoken non-English languages in King County. Learning to typeset in non-Latin languages was a valuable experience for me, and I’m excited to apply these skills to multi-lingual documents in the future.

beach walk cart fact cards

I created this activity and designed cards to match. This activity is at the Beach Walk cart, which is a movable hands-on experience where guests can hold and examine sea animal skeletons. This guessing game has two difficulties, to entice a wide range of guests to identify animals from their remains.

polar science day “polar poll” pop-up

For Polar Science Day, I worked with Science Engagement leads to create interactive polls for guests to contribute citizen science to. Over December, we collected over 3,400 guest responses!

Our most popular poll was asking guests which polar animal was their favorite. We aimed to represent both Arctic and Antarctic animals from across the animal kingdom.
